Northwest Missouri State University, originally founded in 1905, began as a teacher-training institution and has since grown into a comprehensive regional university known for its focus on applied learning, agriculture, and business programs. Starting in the 1930s, zippers were applied to nearly every garment imaginable. The first zippered sweatshirts often featured a polo-style collar and placket with the zipper running down the top quarter of the body, hence the name "quarter zip". This model has a unique ribbed collar with track striping.
